For those interested in the advancement of science check out BOINC software. BOINC stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, and the purpose is to donate computing power to various scientific research projects. I chose the World Community Grid, which works on two different projects, with one being research on AIDS. Some of the projects that you can choose are listed below:

Climateprediction.net: study climate change

http://lhcathome.cern.ch/: improve the design of the CERN LHC particle accelerator
